A Beacon of Hope in Semi-Arid Kenya

The schools of Kanjoo are nestled in the sunbaked landscapes of Meru County and continue to face the ongoing pressing challenge of temporary classrooms; cramped and sweltering under the relentless semi-arid heat, struggling to accommodate the growing student population. With THI’s ongoing efforts to improve the facilities in our 7 partner schools, we embarked on a transformative project to construct a more modern set of classrooms to redefine learning spaces for generations to come. Our vision was clear: to create an environment that was not just functional, but inspiring—a classroom designed for flexibility, comfort, and growth.

Collaborative Innovation: Architects Unite

THI launched a call for architects countrywide to design a Twin Classroom, alongside a kitchen and administration block. Three standout architects were shortlisted, each presenting visionary designs. While one emerged as the winner, THI’s belief in collective brilliance led to an unexpected twist: all three architects joined forces, refining the winning design with shared expertise. This collaboration ensured the final blueprint balanced aesthetics, functionality, and adaptability to Kanjoo’s harsh climate.

Building Dreams: Local Roots, Global Impact

With designs finalised, the leading architect supervised construction, while THI prioritized local engagement. A cost-effective, community based construction company was selected, infusing the project with local knowledge and empowering the economy. The resulting Twin Classroom stands as a testament to global partnership and grassroots effort.

Classrooms That Inspire

The new Twin Classroom allows:

  • Spacious, Airy Interiors: Designed to mitigate heat, with enhanced ventilation and ample natural light.
  • Flexible Learning Zones: Movable furniture and expanded writing spaces foster
    interactive teaching.
  • Indoor-Outdoor Integration: Furnished outdoor areas extend learning beyond walls,
    encouraging creativity.

Teachers now enjoy unparalleled flexibility, while students thrive in an environment tailored to their needs. The kitchen and admin block—part of the broader vision—await future phases, promising even greater community impact.
