In 2023, the Gatoline-Mwitethia group began to diversify into avocado trees as an alternative source of income. Trying to grow enough trees as a single farmer would not provide a profitable market, but as a group, they could see the potential. They calculated that if each member planted 10 avocado trees, then collaboratively they would generate enough of a harvest to sell further afield for three times the price that was possible locally.
Polly and Sam Trollope helped motivate the group by donating trees to start their venture, but more avocado trees are needed for the group to collectively grow enough for market.
